Administrivia, General Chaos

The Register:UK Government proposes policy making Open Source the default standard for government agency IT procurement.

Apparently, this is part of some wider EU thing, with the goal of pooling IT resources across EU administrations and promoting use of Open Source, or at least obtaining full rights to code.

In the wilderness of Redmond, a cry echoes…

Sylvester Stallone and I are fellow fatties

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, the Center for Disease Control's index for measuring obesity places a significant number of action heroes and athletes on the rolls of the obese. I did the CDC's math, and I'm up over the Body Mass Index (BMI) score for obesity (BMI=((weight/height)/height)*703; a score of over 30 is “obese”)–and Sammy Sosa, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Sylvester Stallone are right up there with me.
The good news is that a study by the Cooper Institute in Dallase shows that as long as you're physically active, body weight has little impact on mortality. Dieting to lose weight isn't effective; people with a “healthy” weight who were not fit are nearly twice as likely to die early as overweight, active people.

I've always been annoyed by measures of fitness that depended more on body measurements than what you can do with your body. When I was in the Navy, I could “max out” my score on sit-ups on the physical fitness test, and score well above average on the other physical challenges. But I've always battled my gut; the only time I've ever been at a “healthy” weight in recent memory was when I was running 6 miles a night, living on SlimFast, and under a huge amount of stress at home. I pissed my body off, and I ended up with an infection that put an end to my running for a while(and consequently led to the end of my first marriage).

So put away that Slimfast, Sly.
